Q. Can I put epoxy grout over old grout?
A.It's usually not a good idea to put cement grout over old grout. Some sites say it's possible, but most say it's not a good idea for the best results. The old grout should be taken off to a depth that's half the thickness of the tile for good bonding. One source says to take off at least a couple of millimetres, which is about two dimes put on top of each other. Putting new grout on top of old grout might not give you the results you want because the new grout layer might be too thin and let the old grout show through. Even though it takes more work, getting rid of the old grout makes the finish last longer and look better. Some experts say that the grout should be taken off until it's two-thirds the depth of the tile.
