Q. How deep is laser marking?
A.Laser marking goes to different depths based on the stuff being marked and what it is used for. Laser marks are not very deep. For things like steel the depth is often between 0.01 and 0.5 mm. This small depth works well to make marks that last and can be read without making the material weak. For making marks that go down further, like deep engraving, the depth can become several millimeters. This is done by going over the same area many times or using lasers with more power. How deep a laser mark gets also depends on things such as how strong the laser is and what the material is made of. For example aluminum often gets less deep marks because it reflects light. On the other hand materials like stainless steel can get deeper marks if the laser settings are right. Laser engraving takes material away to make a dip and this usually results in depths from 10 to 50 microns. This can be made deeper by processing the material more than once. The depth of laser marking is adjusted to fit particular needs, like being able to track items or to make something look nice.
