Q. How does an oily separator work?
A.An oily water separator operates in various ways to separate water from oil. First, a coarse filter or strainer takes out large trash from the fouled bilge water. Gravity in the separation tank makes the oil float toward the surface as a layer above the water. Large oil droplets coalesce and form, making them easier to eliminate. The heavier particles can be forced outward through centrifugal force, which will also assist separation. An oil skimmer thereafter skims away the oil on top of the water. Finally, an exit pipe allows the clean water to exit, typically after further filtration to meet the required regulation levels.
