Q. What is the mechanism of plate and frame filter?
A.A series of plates and frames are arranged in a circular pattern by utilizing specialized equipment, with each plate being covered by filter cloth. The frames themselves are hollow to hold the slurry, which is then pumped into the frame by an hydraulic system that drives them together to create pressure. This pressure filters the liquid component of the slurry through the filter cloth, depositing solid particles behind it to produce a filter cake in the frames. The now filtrate-free liquid is gathered and drained out while the filtration runs. Solids leave their cake in the frames until filtration is complete. The press is opened and the filter cake is removed from the frames after the cycle ends. Surface filtration forms the foundation of the system whereby the filter media acts as a barrier separating the particles from the liquids. Designed for solid-liquid separation, it is applied mostly in sectors including food processing, wastewater treatment, and pharmaceuticals.
