Pressure filtration is necessary for a plate filter to function particularly in a plate and frame filter press.  The process forms filtration chambers by sequentially using multiple plates and frames.  Between each frame and plate is a filter cloth that passes liquids but not solids.  Initially the process begins with slurry being pumped into the chambers. While the plates and the frame are tightly clamped, a hydraulic press is used to exert pressure.  Liquid part of the slurry seeps through the filter fabric of the chambers, letting solid particles drop to create a filter cake.  After drainage off and removal of the filtrate, we remain with the solid cake between the plates until discharge when the press is opened. In some industries such as chemical, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and wastewater treatment, the method is effective for liquid-solids separation.  The method can treat very large quantities of sludge and has high filtration efficiency.  Nevertheless, it requires continuous maintenance to function properly.
