Q. Is injection molding a CNC?
A.Injection molding and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining represent two different methods of making products. During injection molding, plastic, rubber or metal turns liquid through heat, then moves into a shaped space where it becomes solid. The hardened item comes out after cooling. In contrast CNC machining cuts away sections from a solid piece through tools that follow computer directions. The systems serve separate purposes. CNC equipment makes the spaces used in injection molding but does not participate in the molding itself. CNC methods create detailed forms out of many substances, yet injection molding fits better for making large numbers of basic items, mostly from plastic. Several factors determine which process fits best: the amount needed, what it is made from, how complex the design is and the price of production.
